Alcantara vs Dinamica

Both materials get called suede, neither one is. They look similar in photographs, they cost different amounts, and most people choosing between them are working from a manufacturer’s brochure rather than anyone who’s cut and stitched both.

I’ve used both for years. Here’s the difference between Alcantara vs Dinamica.

What is Alcantara?

Alcantara is a microfibre made in Italy by Alcantara S.p.A. It’s a composite of polyester and polyurethane, not leather and not suede, though it’s often mistaken for both.

It’s been in production since the early 1970s and turns up as a factory option across performance and luxury, cars steering wheels, seat centres, headliners, dash tops. It’s a registered trademark, so a car described as having Alcantara either has the real thing or has something else being described loosely.

What is Dinamica?

Dinamica is a microfibre that does the same job. The technology is Japanese, and it’s dyed and finished in Italy.

The difference is what it’s made from: recycled polyester, largely from old textiles and PET bottles, produced using a water-based process rather than chemical solvents.

It arrived later than Alcantara and doesn’t carry the same name recognition, which is part of why it costs less. It isn’t a budget imitation. It’s a comparable material with a different supply chain.

The differences that actually matter

  • Cost. Dinamica is cheaper. That’s the clearest difference and often the deciding one.

  • Texture. Dinamica has a slightly more pronounced nap. Side by side you’d notice, in isolation most people wouldn’t.

  • Wear. In my experience they wear much the same. Both go shiny in the places your hands sit if they’re neglected, and both stay looking right if they’re cleaned.

  • Working with it. Dinamica lays down better on panels. On a curved doorcard or a dash top that’s a real advantage, and it shows in the finish.

  • Recycled content. Dinamica is made from recycled polyester. If that matters to you, it’s a genuine point of difference.

my thoughts on alcantara vs dinamica

Since running EDGE Automotive 2010, I’ve had the opportunity to work extensively with both Dinamica and Alcantara. In recent years, I’ve increasingly turned to Dinamica as a high-quality alternative to Alcantara, largely due to the more competitive pricing.

From an aesthetic perspective, Dinamica closely mimics Alcantara, with a slightly more pronounced texture that adds a subtle depth to the material. In terms of performance, both materials offer similar levels of durability and luxury, but one of the standout qualities of Dinamica is how well it lays on panels, making the installation process smoother and the final result even more refined.

Unless a customer has a very specific reason for choosing Alcantara, I often recommend Dinamica for the cost savings without sacrificing quality or appearance.
