BMW M Sport steering wheel retrims in leather, Alcantara or Dinamica, with the M tri-colour stitch.

Why owners have this done?

Two reasons, usually.

The first is condition. A worn M Sport wheel drags the whole interior down, because it’s the part you’re looking at and holding every time you drive. Everything else can be spotless and the wheel still gives the car away.

The second is that the factory wheel is fairly plain for what the car is. Once it’s coming apart anyway, the difference between putting it back as it was and finishing it properly is small.

The M Sport wheel is a good wheel that ages badly. The leather goes shiny where your hands sit, the thumb grips wear before anything else, and on higher-mileage cars it starts to feel slick rather than grippy.

A retrim puts that right and while it’s apart, it’s the natural moment to have the wheel finished the way you’d have specified it.

Why have me do it?

I’m one person. I quote your wheel, I do the work, and I’m the one who decides whether it’s good enough to go back in the box. There’s no handover to a bench, and nobody working through a daily target.

That isn’t a claim to care more than the next trimmer, there are good people in this trade. It’s just that when it’s one pair of hands the whole way through, there’s nowhere for a corner to get cut without me knowing about it.

This is how I make a living, so wheels do need to go out. But I’d rather do fewer of them properly than more of them quickly, and the standard I work to is whether I’d be happy with it in my own car.

Full leather. Clean, hard-wearing, and what most people picture. Black is a stock colour so there’s no wait and no surcharge.
Perforated leather. Better grip and it breathes, which matters if you drive the car properly.
Alcantara or Dinamica. Softer and more tactile, and the most noticeable change of the three. I’ve written about the difference between Alcantara and Dinamica.

The M tri-colour stitch

The M division light blue, dark blue and red thread is the most requested addition on these wheels, and it’s the detail that makes the wheel look like it was always meant to be that way.

It works best against dark leather or Dinamica, where the three colours have something to sit against. On a lighter finish it can look busier than you’d expect.

Stitch style and colour are included in the price it’s not an extra.

PRICING

Steering wheel retrims start at £220. No VAT to pay.

That’s a full retrim in leather, Alcantara or Dinamica and it includes whichever stitch style we agree on.

Stock materials: no surcharge and no waiting: black or grey Alcantara and Dinamica, black leather, both plain and perforated.

Priced separately:

12 o’clock band: £30: A contrasting strip in leather or Alcantara marking dead centre.
Added rim thickness
Airbag or horn push covering
Special order colours.

You don’t pay until you’re happy

When the wheel is finished I photograph it and send the pictures over. You look at the work and confirm you’re happy. Only then do I take payment.

Turnaround

I have wheels Monday to Friday and aim to get yours back before the Friday. Postal delays are outside my control, but that’s the week I work to.

Original covering comes off, the wheel is prepared properly, and it’s retrimmed to whatever we’ve agreed.

You see it before you pay

Photos of the finished wheel come to you first. Payment once you’ve confirmed you’re happy.

It comes back insured

Returned by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes £750 of insurance as standard.

Does Alcantara wear faster than leather?

In my experience they wear much the same. What actually decides how a wheel ages is how it’s looked after. Regular cleaning matters far more than which material you chose.

Alcantara has a reputation for being delicate, and I don’t think it’s deserved. A neglected leather wheel goes shiny and worn in exactly the same places a neglected Alcantara one does.

Yes. Get in touch first and I’ll give you a date. Wheels are booked in rather than sent on spec, so yours isn’t sitting in a queue behind someone else’s.

No. The wheel needs to be off the car before it comes to me. If you’re not confident doing it, any garage or auto electrician will handle it.

Any of them. The wheels differ in shape but the work is the same, so it makes no difference whether it’s an E46, an F30 3 Series, a 4 Series, a 5 Series or anything else.

Yes and in places, tidier. The factory stitching on these isn’t always as consistent as you’d expect; once you know to look at the spacing and tension, you start spotting where it wanders.
